According to Us

One Husband, One Wife, Five Children and Everything in Between

Being in Oklahoma, we get to experience things that are unique. Today the third grade of my daughter’s school had their land run day. If you are not familiar with what the Land Run is, watch Far & Away (with Tom Cruise). The Land Run is celebrated every year on April 22, from the original that occurred in 1889. Both Oklahoma City and Guthrie became established towns literally over night. To commemorate this great occasion the kids all dress in cute Prairie cloths and reenact the occasion. Earlier in the morning they made butter and ate it on homemade bread (which I contributed to).

She was so excited about this, that she would put the dress on every afternoon. I called her my milk maid.

Around 11:00 all the kids gathered outside in their family groups. Most groups had wagon, some were even covered wagon. In side what their packed lunches.

Everyone lined up on the line, waiting for the signal to go

In wouldn’t be a real land run without a couple Sooners. {In case you are like me, and don’t know what a sooner is, it is someone who leaves the start line sooner, to get a better plot of land.}

She was actually part of a group that had a girl in a wheel chair, so they got a little head start.

Once it was staked, the father of each family would go and collect the deed to the land. While he was doing that, the rest of the family set out their picnic lunch.

After lunch they were going to have a break and then make homemade ice cream using freezer bags.
